IR Illuminators

Infrared (IR) illuminators project covert invisible beams unseen by the human eye but seen with lowlight cameras and night vision goggles in total darkness. IR illuminators provide capabilities beyond those provided by thermal cameras.

Infrared (IR) Illumination

Using advanced LED’s, infrared (IR) illuminators project an invisible beam, unseen by the human eye, but covertly seen with lowlight cameras and night vision goggles. Unlike thermal cameras, an “invisible” IR beam can covertly identify letters, numbers, and flags on vessels in total darkness, penetrate glass, and provide a crisp and clear video image. IR Illuminators do not replace thermal cameras, but rather provide the operator with additional night vision capabilities.

Carlisle & Finch has three IR Illuminator offerings with marine designs:

  • Fixed IR Illuminators
  • LED Searchlights with Internal IR LEDs
  • Xenon/Halogen Searchlights with IR Illuminator

Before After

“Fixed” IR Illuminators

Offered in 10, 12 and 19-inch diameter “Fixed” projector models, these marinized products are perfectly suited for security applications such as harbors, shorelines, weapons compounds, prisons, and more. The advanced Infrared LEDs have an extremely long life, and low power consumption, which economically provides continuous covert surveillance monitoring 24/7.

LED Searchlights with Internal IR LEDs

Offered as an option on the 12-inch and 19-inch LED searchlights, infrared (IR) LEDs can be specified inside the searchlight housing, in addition to the Visible LEDs. The IR LEDs project an “invisible” beam, which provides covert surveillance when used in conjunction with night vision goggles and lowlight cameras.

Xenon/Halogen Searchlights with IR Illuminator

IR illuminators are offered as an option on 19-inch Halogen and 500/1000/2500 watt Xenon Searchlights, either as a new-build product, or field upgrade. External IR illuminators attach to the searchlight head and project an “invisible” beam, providing covert surveillance with night vision goggles and lowlight cameras.

IR Illumination vs. Thermal

IR Illuminators provide capabilities not provided by thermal cameras…

  • Identifies letters, numbers, and flags on vessels
  • Penetrates glass, thereby seeing into pilothouse windows
  • Provides clearer video images, which is beneficial for reducing liability when recording nighttime incidents and events
  • Enhances night vision goggles and lowlight cameras on extremely dark and cloudy nights
  • Provides covert surveillance for lowlight cameras integrates within FLIR® systems
  • Provides greater identification of objects with no heat signature, such as firearms and floating debris in the water (logs, ice, etc.)
  • If paired with a lowlight camera, the lowlight camera will also see during the daytime as well in total darkness
